Lucy Nicholson is a UK based illustrator who uses various styles and mediums to explore the realms of horror, folklore and monsters both real and fictional. Frequently fluctuating between hyper-realism and ultra-stylized works to bring her creatures to life, her subject matter stays consistent in its focus on natural vs unnatural. Lucy consistently challenges the concept of the monstrous in media and culture within her artwork, using various techniques and styles to challenge the viewer. Although her work focuses on the macabre, the artists humor and visual storytelling shines through in every piece of work that she produces.
Graduating with a BA(hons) illustration qualification, Lucy has extensive knowledge of many industry standard software such as procreate, photoshop and adobe illustrator among others. As well as her proficiency in illustration she has produced animated works for paying commissioners, using toon boom and adobe animate. Ever looking to broaden her horizons in stylized illustration, Lucy continues to stretch the boundaries of her artistic abilities using new mediums and software.
At the northern school of art, Lucy established and refined a freelance illustration business on multiple social media platforms, selling prints of original works and specialized client commissions. During her time working with commissioners she has collaborated with animators and creatives across the internet, creating posters and concept art for spotify’s ‘Dorks in Distress’ podcast and various animated shorts, zines and articles published online. Alongside her online presence Lucy now regularly attends conventions in the northeast to network with other local artists and sell her work in person, and having found immediate success at these events she will continue to pursue bigger and better venues to present her work.
Her final major project produced during her time at university is a children’s story book based around cryptozoology and American folklore, vastly different from most works she has completed in the past. With her book ‘cryptkids’ she hopes to show her diversity as an artist, not only being able to create realistic concept art illustrations but also simplified stylized works, appealing to two hugely different audiences, and showing her flexibility as an artist. She is always seeking to widen her audience and bring her fascination with the strange and unusual to new people, with ‘cryptkids’ the focus is introducing children to new realms of imagination. The book is a commercial length, fully illustrated journey from New Jersey to Mexico, following an unlikely trio of monster friends who learn to see girlhood through a monstrous new lens.
Lucy has a wide variety of illustrative skills which are put on full display within her portfolio, where the range of work she has produced is available to view. Never being satisfied with just one medium or style, her work has definite commercial applications within both the field of children’s book illustration and video game concept art. Having recently completed her degree in illustration she will be seeking to move on from her career as a freelance artist and begin working full time with either a children’s book publishing house or concept art studio.
