  Daisy-Mae Proby
Daisy-Mae Proby is a Designer and Illustrator who is going on to graduate with a BA (Honours) degree in Illustration for Commercial Application. Daisy’s specialisation has changed many times over the three years she spent at university, but she settled into surface design during her final year. She always had an interest in interior/ surface design and her final major project (FMP) gave her a really good opportunity to explore that interest, focusing on creating a collection of wallpaper designs and tile decals. This also gave her the opportunity to turn this into a personal business and she began this by going through The Prince’s Trust.

Daisy-Mae’s art path did not begin with a focus on surface design. She has journeyed through a variety of interests and, while focusing on surface design, she still enjoys doing other side projects. These include advertising and poster work which is something she’s enjoyed since trying t in 2023, during her second year of university.

During her time at university, Daisy-Mae focused on improving her skills as an illustrator and developing her ideas as a designer whilst working towards being more experienced with software such as; InDesign, Photoshop and Procreate. Working on these software applications has allowed Daisy to explore her creativity and develop her portfolio which shows her strongest skills.

University has been an amazing opportunity to explore different projects for Daisy meaning that she was able to discover which things she loved and which other things she wasn’t as fond of. Working primarily in a digital style, Daisy’s work is heavily contemporary, her illustrations having quite a stylised approach and bright and colourful palettes. When it came to her final major project, she really leant into this style, especially utilising bolder colour palettes. During her study at The Northern School of Art, Daisy has completed multiple private commissions. Once she started her final major project, and developed her business surrounding it, Daisy was able to work on multiple different customised wallpaper designs as some of her first business sales.

Once graduated, Daisy plans to pursue a postgraduate Master’s qualification immediately, in order to take another year to work on developing her skills and style. She plans to experiment with more analogue methods rather than purely digital. Alongside starting a Master’s, Daisy also plans to really lean into her business, focusing on making it a more established brand within the surface design industry and finding opportunities to expand her business at any point she can along the way.

Daisy-Mae views the final major project as the most important (and most intense) project she’s done so far. It’s been a project that she’s felt has tested her creativity and her ability to manage her time and her own project. From concept to execution, each phase of the project demanded attention to detail and dedication to the completion. It’s been her favourite project to complete to this date, and she’s excited to continue working from it. She is ready to start a new wallpaper collection already and is extremely pleased with the result of her first.
