Callum Tregear is an Illustrator/ designer that is graduating with a BA (Hons) degree in illustration for Commercial Application, Callum specialises in Environment design and develops concepts for both environment and characters. The time Callum has spent at university, he has improved his skills developing full rendered Concepts and illustrations as well as gain a large amount of experience within software such as Procreate, InDesign and Photoshop allowing him to have a good understanding on the software, he has also begun to try his skills in 3D design, creating characters and environments in the likes of Nomad sculpt and Blender. The skills within 3D and Concept world has allowed Callum to develop a portfolio that shows his skills from sketches and ideas to fully rendered illustrations and 3D models.

While at University Callum leaned into the Concept side of things heavily having the majority of his projects in a concept style using techniques, he has developed over the first two years, Callum’s 3rd year has been a chance for him to start showing how much he has improved within the Concept world and developed his FMP (Final Major Project) to be all bout concepts showing everything from sketches, thumbnails and final images/ projects. Callum’s aim for this FMP was to develop a set of characters within the Japanese EDO period that are placed into full rendered images as well as developing products such as a 3D model of his character and his own Concept Art book.

Callum’s art path did not start digital, Callum had originally started with pencil and paper self-taught realism with his favourite developing realistic images of animals, doing this taught Callum the understanding of vital parts of how things such as animal fur grows and how tonne works, he started collage at level 1 Art and Design where he left with a distinction grade after developing realistic images of animals, he then went into level 2 and 3 graphic design where he spent 2 years developing and learning digital software such as Photoshop and InDesign, this huge jump from traditional to the digital was very tough as there was a lot to learn in little time however this hard transition would come to be very helpful when it came to moving to university and deciding what it is he wanted to do in the future.

Callum’s Concept art journey started around his second year of Graphic design, here he discovered artists such Artur Zima and Andy Walsh, these artists showed Callum he could mix his love for realism and illustration with the digital world and develop detailed images with a very paint feel, this inspired Callum to peruse this as a career path and start gaining as much experience within photoshop as possible.

Once Callum has graduated from university BA (Hons), Callum then plans to continue his time at the Northern School of Art and do a Master’s degree (MA). After graduation Callum is then hoping to peruse career as a Environmental Concept Artist at a north east company called Atomhawk.
